Data Sources
AskTPG uses a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) approach, in which relevant excerpts from The Points Guy’s editorial content are retrieved and provided as contextual input to the model at the time of response generation. For queries/responses about specific credit cards, AskTPG retrieves up-to-date card data from TPG’s proprietary card database to use as context for response generation.
Fairness and Safety Constraints
AskTPG is governed by system-level guardrails designed to:
- Restrict responses to travel rewards, points & miles, travel, and credit card topics within TPG’s editorial scope
- Prevent the provision of financial, legal, tax, or credit health advice
- Detect and refuse out-of-scope, disallowed, or potentially harmful queries via an input classifier
- Clearly disclose to users that they are interacting with an AI system

2. Intended Usage and Limitations
Intended Use
AskTPG is designed to help site visitors and registered users explore points & miles programs, evaluate credit card options, develop redemption strategies, and understand travel loyalty benefits, all grounded in The Points Guy’s editorial content. It delivers conversational, tailored guidance grounded in TPG’s editorial content, complementing TPG’s expert coverage rather than replacing it.
Functional Scope
AskTPG can:
- Answer questions about travel rewards, points & miles, travel, and credit card
- Compare and recommend credit cards based on user spending profile, preferences, and existing card wallet
- Explain card benefits, protections, and features using up-to-date card data
- Guide users on redemption strategy (e.g., transfer partners, award booking approaches)
- Identify the right card to use for a given merchant or spending category
- Evaluate whether a specific redemption offer represents good value
- Support multi-turn conversations by maintaining context within a session
- Store/retrieve context from previous conversations when a user is signed in
- Surface and cite relevant TPG articles as sources
- Deliver personalized responses for signed-in users based on their card wallet, home airport, loyalty programs, and spending preferences
AskTPG does not:
- Make bookings, execute transactions, or access live award availability
- Provide financial, legal, tax, or investment advice
- Provide credit health, credit score, or credit repair guidance
- Advise on credit card churning or application velocity tactics
- Advise on fraudulent, deceptive, or dishonest activity
- Answer general knowledge questions unrelated to travel rewards or credit cards
- Access real-time information such as live flight prices, hotel availability, or breaking news
- Replace local authorities, professional financial, legal, or tax advisors, or official program rules
Limitations
- AskTPG is grounded solely in TPG’s editorial content; limited to topics covered within those sources
- May produce generalized responses when specific content is limited or unavailable in retrieved context
- May occasionally surface content adjacent to (but outside) its intended scope, such as general travel logistics
- May decline to answer questions that fall outside its intended scope
Implementation Environment
AskTPG uses OpenAI’s foundational model via managed API services. The Points Guy does not host, modify, or fine-tune the underlying model. AskTPG operates as an application layer that applies editorial content retrieval, card data retrieval, system instructions, and safety guardrails on top of the foundational model.
Sustainability
AskTPG relies on third-party AI providers, including OpenAI, for model training and inference. The Points Guy references OpenAI’s published sustainability and energy efficiency practices in relation to those AI services.
The Points Guy does not maintain AI model training or inference infrastructure; standard cloud-based infrastructure supports the AskTPG experience.
3. Ethics and Safety
Governance and Oversight
AskTPG is developed and maintained under The Points Guy’s product, editorial, compliance, and data governance practices. Editorial principles guide content selection, tone, and factual grounding, while product and data teams oversee system behavior, monitoring, and ongoing improvements.
Safety Evaluations
Adversarial prompt testing and third-party assessments were conducted to verify the system’s ability to resist attempts to elicit financial, legal, or credit advice, and to confirm scope adherence. The model consistently refused disallowed queries and did not override system instructions during these evaluations. AskTPG undergoes regular internal evaluation to assess:
- Adherence to the intended scope (travel rewards, points & miles, travel, and credit cards)
- Appropriate refusal behavior for unsafe or off-topic prompts
- Content grounding and response relevance
- Hallucination risk and response quality
Bias & Fairness Considerations
The Points Guy is committed to representing credit cards, loyalty programs, and travel products accurately and without commercial bias. Recommendations are intended to reflect TPG’s editorial methodology rather than commercial relationships, and the system is designed to behave consistently across card issuers, loyalty programs, and spending categories.
Privacy Protections
AskTPG is designed to minimize reliance on personal data. Guardrails discourage users from inputting sensitive information into the chat interface. For signed-in users, profile data may be used to personalize responses in accordance with the TPG Privacy Policy.
Mitigations and User Safeguards
AskTPG applies layered content safety controls. The system restricts financial, legal, tax, and credit advice, and refuses disallowed queries. These measures align with The Points Guy’s editorial and AI governance standards.
Ethical and Societal Considerations
AskTPG helps everyday consumers make smarter decisions about travel, points & miles, and credit cards, but does not replace professional financial, legal, or tax advice, issuer-provided terms, or official program rules. Users are clearly notified when engaging with the AI system. For personalized financial guidance, users should consult a qualified advisor.
