Quick summary

If Europe has been calling your name — or maybe just whispering "cheap flights" in your ear — now's the time to answer.

Scandinavian Airlines, commonly known as SAS, just launched an end-of-summer sale that gives you the chance to cross the Atlantic for less than $400 round-trip. SAS is now a full-fledged member of SkyTeam, too — which means you'll get Delta SkyMiles perks when flying the airline.

Through Aug. 26, you can book big discounts on flights out of the airline's major North American gateway cities, including Boston, Miami, New York City and Seattle, to destinations across Scandinavia and Europe. With a generous travel window that stretches from October through May of next year, this deal could lead to winter nights in Copenhagen and the chance to see the northern lights in Norway.

The big drawback to this sale is that some of the best prices we found involved itineraries with two stops, either on the outbound or return leg. We did find a few nonstops available, as well. These fares are part of the SAS Go Light tier, the carrier's basic economy fare. You get a free carry-on bag with your ticket, but that's about it.

Tip: You can save yourself some time by using the low-fare calendar on the airline's website. It will allow you to view the lowest fares by month.

Some of the deals

There is good availability across the board in this sale, but the best prices we saw were for travel in October. We like this nonstop itinerary from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Oslo Airport (OSL) for $398 round-trip.

We found a nice deal from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) in October for just $367 round-trip, with a layover in Copenhagen.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is my home airport, so I'm always interested in what good discounts to Europe are available. This round trip to Dublin Airport (DUB) in November costs less than $400, but the downside? The outbound flight has two stops.

We found a great price to the Czech Republic out of the Pacific Northwest, also in October (notice the trend?). This itinerary from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) costs less than $400 round-trip, a steep discount from typical fares. The return flight here has two stops, in Stockholm and Copenhagen. Still, the price may be worth it.

Bottom line

As we mentioned above, round-trip fares under $400 are available for quite a few routes. But they probably won't last very long. If you're OK with perhaps making two stops on your journey, then you could save some good money on a European vacation.
